Rethinking Sensory Needs: Empowerment over Medicalisation
Note to Reader: In this article, ND Perspective founder Jessica Dark explores how sensory needs are understood within neurodivergent populations. Drawing on her experience, Jessica highlights the limitations of the medicalised approach, which often seeks to "treat" sensory overwhelm rather than empower individuals to self-regulate and trust their bodies. By focusing on teaching proactive sensory regulation and taking preventative measures, Jessica advocates for a shift in perspective that promotes well-being and reduces the impact of external stimuli.

For many neurodivergent people, sensory processing is a core part of daily life. Yet, mainstream perspectives often view sensory needs through a medicalised lens, focusing on "treating" sensory overwhelm instead of empowering people to understand and regulate their sensory experiences. This approach, which prioritises suppression of sensory responses over teaching self-regulation, can leave neurodivergent people disconnected from their bodies and unaware of their sensory needs. From a young age, many neurodivergent people are taught to ignore or repress their sensory responses to fit into environments not designed for them. Whether through schooling, social settings, or medical interventions, the emphasis is often placed on "overcoming" sensory sensitivity rather than listening to the body and understanding how to regulate sensory input. The message is clear: sensory needs are an inconvenience that must be managed, not respected.
As a result, neurodivergent adults who have not been supported to learn regulation strategies struggle to recognise their own sensory triggers or respond effectively when they are overwhelmed. This disconnect from sensory needs creates a cycle of overwhelm and burnout, particularly in high-stimulation environments such as workplaces. The constant suppression of sensory needs leaves little room for self-regulation, which is crucial to maintaining focus, productivity, and well-being. As such, tapping into what our bodies require as neurodivergent people becomes a challenge, as the skills to listen, respond, and regulate have not been cultivated.
At ND Perspective, we believe that the answer lies not in treating sensory overwhelm as a problem to be "fixed," but in teaching people how to regulate their sensory systems and take preventive measures to reduce the frequency and intensity of overwhelm. By learning how to listen to our bodies and respond in real time to sensory signals, we can reduce the impact of external stimuli, maintain our well-being, and remain fully engaged in our work. Understanding sensory regulation isn't just about responding when sensory overload happens—it's about creating an environment where overload happens less frequently. Through proactive strategies, such as sensory breaks, wearable stims, regulation supports and workplace adjustments, people can build a sensory toolkit that helps them navigate different environments more effectively. Teaching people to trust their bodies and manage sensory input throughout the day allows for greater control, concentration, and well-being.
Upcoming Wellbeing Webinars:
As part of our commitment to promoting this understanding, ND Perspective is hosting a webinar on “Neurodiversity”, where will explore alternative ways of viewing neurodivergence that prioritise empowerment and understanding over medicalisation. This is part of a broader wellbeing series that provides an accessible price point for those looking to gain insights on neurodiversity.
- A copy of the webinar slides
- A summary of the session
- Access to the recording for two weeks
To ensure a personalised and interactive experience, each webinar is restricted to a maximum of 25 participants. This intimate setting allows for deeper engagement and meaningful discussion, offering attendees the chance to gain valuable knowledge at a more affordable rate before the full course launches. To learn more and register for these webinars, visit our Wellbeing Webinars page. At ND Perspective, we believe that through recognising our individual needs, we can all move toward a healthier, more productive, and balanced life.
